~Sofia~
My eyelids fluttered so fast my world spun.
“I warned you, Andrews,” Chase grunted between punches. “I’d fucking kill you if you hurt her!”
I stood frozen for a good ten seconds before reality dawned on me. Chase is here. He extracted Kyle away from me, and now he’s about to kill him.
“Stop it!” I dropped the grocery bag, the wine glass broke, and red liquid spilled on the floor as I inserted myself into the scene.
Kyle couldn’t punch back. Chase fenced him with his legs on each side of his torso, practically jackhammering his fist on Kyle’s bloody face.
I don’t know how to get between them, but I need to stop them somehow.
“Chase!” I screamed, but he didn’t hear me. This was a repeat of Rio, but Chase had the element of surprise, giving him the upper hand.
I bit my lip. Knowing Kyle, he won’t retaliate with a fist. He’d fight Chase in his field, and a lawsuit would waste all LBPR’s hard work. I didn’t know how else to stop this. Chase’s blue eyes were dark. He had tunnel vision, and his goal was to kill Kyle, just like what he said.
I kneeled beside them and wrapped my arms around Chase’s waist.
“Chase,” I murmured against his heaving torso. His heart drummed against my arms. He was shaking in anger, but at least he stopped beating Kyle.
He stood up and brought me with him, cupping my face with his bloodied hands. “Are you okay?” I nod. “Are you hurt?” I shook my head no, and tears blurred my sight.
Tidal waves of emotion hit me in every direction just by staring into his eyes.
I blinked back my tears, seeing Kyle gain his foot. He used the wall as a guide, wiping his lip with the other. “You’re dead, Montiero,” Kyle growled, glaring at Chase. “I will make sure you rot in jail for this.”
Anger simmered inside me. I had no doubt Kyle could do that, but he assaulted me first.
I skirted around Chase and faced Kyle. He looked down at me, his gaze softening. “You see the kind of man he is, Sofia? He had-”
“Just stop it, Kyle,” I hissed, standing my ground. “You are not suing Chase.”
His eyes widened, looking like an injured animal. “You’re taking his side? Can’t you see that I’m the victim here?”
I can’t believe this is the same Kyle I was engaged to. He’s a manipulative jerk.
“I can see that. But I hope you are not forgetting what you did to me. You kissed me without permission. You assaulted me first. You show up here and in my office even when I told you a hundred times that I want nothing to do with you.”
I crossed my arms over my chest, feeling dread wash over me as Kyle’s gaze turned lethal. I am battling him on his turf, but I’m not backing down. He’s done enough, and I’ve let it pass for so long. It’s time for me to put an end to this.
“File a case against him, and I will make sure everyone knows how you’ve been harassing me,” I continued, meeting his narrowed eyes with my daggered glare.
His jaw quivered. “You have no evidence.”
I huffed. “Since the day you showed up here when I came back from Rio, I’ve kept copies of the CCTV recordings. I’ve filed countless complaints to the building management not to let you in.”
“You’re bluffing,” his heavy-lidded eyes turned deadly.
“You’re fishing,” I glowered back, putting on my best poker face.
His nose flared. I might not be an expert in this field, but three years of listening to his case stories taught
me a thing or two. “Everything I knew about the law, you taught me, Kyle. Go ahead.”
His eyes flickered behind me. I didn’t have to glance over my shoulder to see Chase smirking, taunting Kyle. “This isn’t over, Montiero.”
I stiffened as Chase gripped my shoulders. “It’s been over for a long time. You just can’t fucking admit that you’re a loser.”
Kyle growled. If his eyes could shoot fire, Chase would be ashes by now. Some sentences are incomplete if you are not reading this novel on Jobnib.com. Now that we’re alone, awareness dawned on me. The broken bottle and spilled wine, Kyle’s flower and wine. on the side of my door, the DNA result, and the man grasping my shoulder.
Chase is here.
I turned to open the door but found it slightly ajar. I clearly remember I hadn’t opened it since Kyle. approached me.
“Sofia,” Chase called as I opened the door.
I gasped. It was dark inside, apart from the candles lining the entry. They were scattered everywhere I looked, casting warm light in my apartment. The scent of lavenders and roses wharf through the air, and rose petals littered the floor.
Stepping inside, I paused at what was waiting in the living room. The couch and coffee table were pushed to the side. A picnic blanket covered the carpet with pillows, a basket, and wine chilling in a bucket.
“What is this?” I asked, my eyes fixed on the romantic setting in my living room.
“I wanted to surprise you.” Chase stood behind me. He wasn’t touching me, but was close enough to feel his body heat against my back.
A lone tear rolled down my cheek.
“What for?” I would like to commend myself for sounding assertive when inside, I was confused as fuck.
I had an idea who might have let him in. Jessica was the only other person with a spare key to my place.
“You know why,” Chase squeezed my shoulder. I jerked and turned to face him.
It’s like I’m seeing him for the first time. The hallway incident was fueled with adrenaline. All my emotions. were heightened by fear and worry. Now, all I could feel was pain and longing… the need to touch him, to know he was really here.
