Former Morocco national team captain Mehdi Benatia has shared his thoughts on Hakim Ziyech’s international retirement following a falling out with current Atlas Lions manager Vahid Halilhodzic.
On February 8, Hakim Ziyech took everyone on the wrong foot, announcing his international retirement at the age of only 29. After the early elimination of Morocco in the African Cup of Nations (round of 16), the coach backtracked, summoning the Chelsea player again. But he did not answer the call.
A dismissal that prompted the Bosnian technician to come out of his hinges and declare: “but now it’s over. I will never speak of them again. I focus on my group and the players called up.. And for Mehdi Benatia, the situation will not change as long as Vahid is at the head of the Atlas Lions.
“In my opinion, with Vahid he will not return. I don’t want to say he won’t come back because I hope not and he’s still young. If we go to the World Cup, I hope he will change his mind and want to come back. Morocco loses an important player like Mahrez in Algeria or Salah with Egypt. It’s shooting yourself in the foot.” assured Benatia to Footmercaty. Ziyech expects an apology from Vahid Halilhodzic.
“Ziyech’s problem already is that he doesn’t want to come because he feels he has been disrespected. It’s between him and the coach. I am often asked the question as if I was with them that day. I know Hakim loves his country and the selection. He never cheated and always gave his best. I tried to talk to him as a supporter, but he explained his choice to me. »
