There was massive jubilation in the camps of Team Oyo and Kano on Wednesday after both states won their first gold medals at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Benin City.
Having claimed eight medals, Oyo were yet to win a gold, but that changed on Wednesday afternoon when Joseph Oluwadamilare won the gold medal in the +100kg Judo final.
It was a medal rush for Team Oyo on Day 6 of the festival as Adejoke Durogbade also won bronze in the cycling 200m sprint (female) to claim her second medal of the festival.
Olayode Hauwawu followed suit by winning the state’s first silver medal in the 67kg Taekwondo event.
Edward Shinyi also won silver in the individual Kata men (Karate). In the male Nando Taolu in Kung fu event, Eweje Adeleye won a bronze medal to take the total tally of the state’s medal to 11 at the festival.
Team Kano’s seven-a-side rugby team defeated Team Plateau 24-5 to claim gold.
Just like Team Oyo, Kano had won three medals in taekwondo, kick-boxing and Kung fu Taolu, but added gold to that on Wednesday.
