Why do we crave certain foods so much?

Are you craving a chocolate cake or a bag of chips? The craving for food could send you a message that you probably did not expect.

If you crave chocolate all day and you can not avoid it, then it is a sign that you are deprived of some minerals that are in this sweet delight, such as magnesium and potassium. Read on to find out why you crave certain foods so much.

You do not consume enough fiber

If you do not consume enough fiber your body will not have the fuel it needs to function. This can lead to a craving for sugar, which is common if one follows a strict diet. The same thing can happen if you skip a meal or do a lot of exercise. So instead of succumbing to the sweet temptation, try eating whole grains along with vegetables and fruits.

Need more dairy or alternative dairy sources

Adults need two servings a day of dairy or three servings if you are over 50 years old. If you crave something salty, it may have to do with the fact that you are deprived of milk or yogurt. Most of the time you can satisfy your craving for something salty with a glass of milk or other dairy food, such as cheese or yogurt.

Do not drink enough water

If your water intake is not enough, your body may send you signals and make you think you are hungry. Before you get to the point of eating a cookie, think about whether you drank enough water during the day. If you have not drunk, then a glass can reduce wrinkles.

You’ve got low levels of iron and zinc

A strong craving for a particular food can be a sign that you are deficient in essential minerals, usually iron or zinc. If this happens then it is important to seek treatment because in addition to being a sign of nutritional deficiency, this disorder can cause stomach and intestinal obstruction.

You are under pressure

People with mild depression tend to crave carbohydrates, and actually feel better after eating them. An intense craving for processed carbs can also be a symptom of a seasonal affective disorder. Remember to eat healthy carbs instead of drowning out your grief at cookies and chips.
